Hello!
Welcome to my website.
Here, you can find information about my summer internship with the Georgetown, TX Parks and Recreation Department.
The City of Georgetown, TX Parks and Recreation Department (GPARD) began in 1990 when they hired their first Director. Before 1990, the there was a Parks Superintendent who was housed in the Public Works Department who was over about 5 or 6 parks workers who maintained the grounds of the few park areas that existed in Georgetown at that time. A City Manager who graduated from Baylor with a degree in Parks and Recreation was elected in 1988, which is most likely the reason that the GPARD was created in 1990. At that time the department had no Recreation Center or trails system, the youth leagues were operated by other organizations, and the 3 pools were outsourced to other companies.
In 1995 the GPARD had approximately 17 staff members and a $1.8 million budget (by this time, that budget included the new Recreation Center) operating about 13 parks and some simple playgrounds. In 2015 the GPARD had 91 full time equivalent staff and a $9.5 million budget operating approximately 32 parks and many more, much nicer playgrounds.
The GPARD has won the State Gold Medal for the best parks and recreation department for a city of it’s size 3 times and in 1999 it won the National Gold Medal in the same category. In the 26 years it has been operating the GPARD has received $2 million in TPW grants and $47 million in bonds. The bonds are particularly impressive because they show that the citizens of Georgetown support the department as they have to vote to approve the bonds which in turn raise their taxes.
The City of Georgetown mission statement is as follows:
To preserve and enhance the quality of life, and unique character of Georgetown by preserving the rich heritage and natural resources; promoting well-planned development, cost-effective professional management, and competent friendly services and; protecting its citizens, the environment, and all other assets.
The City of Georgetown Parks and Recreation Department mission statement is as follows:
To provide diverse recreation opportunities through parks, facilities and programs to enhance our community’s quality of life.
